Steve Fillo (11/10/1989 - 8/30/2009)
The University of Alabama community lost Frozen Tide hockey player Steve Fillo early morning Sunday, Aug. 30 2009 due to injuries caused by a one-car accident after the team’s training camp concluded Saturday Aug. 29. His brother Joey was with his brother when the two were traveling from the Tide’s home ice arena, 56 miles from the Tuscaloosa campus. Joey sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Fillo was a natural hockey player. He was the kind of kid that wouldn’t say a word on the bench or in the locker room but when he touched the ice, you could tell he was something special. The coaching staff was excited to have Fillo back as a sophomore along with his younger brother Joey. During a scrimmage at training camp that year, Steve scored a hat-trick.
Steve recorded 3 goals and 3 assists in 11 games in the 2008-2009 season for the Frozen Tide. During a game against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, Steve scored the game-tying goal to help Alabama secure a come-back victory.
Bama Hockey and the Fillo Family created the “Fillo Faceoff” in the Spring of 2010 in memory of Steve. Through donations and fundraising, the event awards financial sponsorships to assist youth hockey players in the Pelham community learn to play. We have raised over $2500 promoting the game of hockey to date. Please make a secure donation to the Steve Fillo Memorial Fund to help another child share Steve’s love of the game.
