When did the Frozen Tide start?

2005/2006 was the inaugural season.

Is the Frozen Tide a NCAA Varsity Sport?

Bama Hockey competes in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).  Though the organization plays an intercollegiate schedule, student athletes are non-scholarship. We are a student-run organization, funded separately from the University of Alabama Athletic Association.

Who does the University of Alabama Play?

UA competes in the ACHA Division III, which is divided into 4 regions. All SEC schools (with the exception of Kentucky) are members of the SECHC (South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference) of the South Region. The Tide faces every SECHC team at least once during the regular season and plays for a Conference Championship every February.

Are there National Championships?

Yes, this year the Division III National Championship will be in Michigan in March of 2011.  Division III is divided into the North, Atlantic, South, and Pacific regions.  The top 2 teams ranked in the South at the end of the regular season qualify for Nationals. Teams ranked 3-10 compete in the South Regional Tournament in late February for the 2 remaining spots.

When do you play?

All of our games are on either Friday nights, Saturday nights, and occasionally on Sunday. We rarely play Sunday’s and never on a week night other than Friday.  We recognize that the primary reason our student athletes are at The University of Alabama is to receive an education.  We make every effort to avoid causing any of our students missing class because of hockey.

How is the club/team organized?

The club has a student organization composed of a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.  Their responsibilities are to manage the requirements of the University, Campus PR, lobby for University funding for club programs and manage club funds.  In addition, the team has a Coaching Staff and a Booster Club that work in coordination and cooperation with the student leaders.

How is the Team Financed?

Fielding a ice hockey club is expensive due to the travel and facility costs associated with the game. Most of the financial burden rests among the players and their families. The Bama Hockey Booster Club is a non-profit organization that can receive tax-deductible donations from its sponsors.
