The Frozen Tide finished the weekend in Huntsville with their first SECHC Championship. In the final game, the Tide met up with old rivals in the University of Florida Gators. The Gators had knocked the Tide out in last year’s semifinal match-up, but this was the year of the Tide. Alabama won 7-2, and goalie John Bierchen was awarded the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player Award.
After surviving a semifinal scare against Vanderbilt on Saturday night (Bama win 4-2), the Tide came out Saturday and quickly established a 4-0 lead behind goals by Zach Dailey, Mark Wysock, Matt Mayes and Alex Dubrinsky. Finding themselves in penalty trouble during the second period, Florida was able to cut the lead in half to 4-2, but senior Captain Christian Edge quickly answered to give the Tide the 5-2 advantage. Zach Dailey and Mark Wysock added there second goals of the match in the third period to make the final 7-2.
The Tide now turn their attention to the ACHA D3 National Championship Tournament in Vineland, NJ. Bama will face 2008 National Champion California University of Pennsylvania in their opening game on March 14. Team President Ryan Barletta and Assistant Coach/GM David Noble recently met with University of Alabama Provost Judy Bonner to discuss the future of Bama Hockey and to give the UA Acts of Kindness Fund a $3,400 check from the proceeds of the Tide’s charity gave versus Virginia Tech earlier in the season. We see nothing but growth in our future. Roll Tide!
Friday night in Huntsville, the Frozen Tide opened up the SECHC Championship with a 5-0 win over South Carolina. Goalie John Bierchen shut out USC for the second time in a month, while Matt Mayes scored two goals in front of his hometown crowd. Auburn and Alabama had large crowds for the opening round games in Huntsville. Alabama will play Vanderbilt this evening in the semi-final match-up.
